The Old Oak Table

Most of you probably have one furniture item in your home that you love the most. Mine is this table which belonged to my parents. They bought it second hand soon after they moved into the new house Dad built in 1950.

Our family of five ate all our meals at this table ... well, except when we had the preachers come for dinner during revival week - they earned seats in the dining room :)

Mom was an amazing cook - homemade yeast rolls, pies,
cakes were always available at this table. Fried chicken,
pot roast, beef stew.

Back then, the table was painted white. Funny, Mom had it white, but when I got it, I couldn't wait to get it back to its natural oak. (Mom decided she'd rather have a chrome and formica one.)

And instead of using it as our family table, it's always been my desk. No drawers, but there are lots of ways to get around that.

I'd love to hear about your favorite piece of furniture - and the history behind it.

Mary

  2. That is a lovely table, Mary. Plus I loved the little glimpses of your room that I could see. I'm fortunate to have the bedroom suit my parents bought me when I was 14 that Bruce and I use. I also have Mom's Singer treadle machine in the spare bedroom. And I now have their cherry dining room suit. Lots of extended family meals around that table.

  3. Oh, I love the desk and its story.

I have several pieces with history, but I'll tell you about one of my sister's pieces. She has a table quite similar to yours. My mother was a school secretary and the school district was having a sale of pieces. Like your mother, they were probably going with formica and chrome back then. My mother bought a beautiful cherrywood table with similar designs to yours for $.50. It was never in our home, but simply sat in our overcrowded garage. My sister was the first to grab it for her home and I have always loved it. She too uses hers as a desk.

  7. Such a beautiful table, Mary and I loved hearing your wonderful memories of it. I have a small octagonal table that belonged to my husband's grandma. The top of it was badly water damaged as she kept plants on it in the bay window of her lounge.. We loved the little table and sanded the top and painted it and have been using it for years now....we still call it grandma's table!
    Happy weekend!

  9. I really love your table too. I am going to have to think which piece I love the most. So much of mine is stored on the farm until we build. We are living in what will be our guest house and it's a construction zone.
